How to Write a Resume That Stands Out in 2024

Your resume is a marketing document. It needs to do two things: Convey your value to the employer and it needs to do it well. In 2024, going into 2025 your resume is competing with 100s of other qualified job seekers. Here are 4 tips that you can implement today to make your resume stand out:

  • Leverage keywords from job description: Recruiters will be looking at your resume, however there are certain companies who use their Applicant Tracking System to rank your resume. This doesn't mean that a human doesn't look at your resume. You need to convey what you've done to the human on the other side in their language. Which means you read the job description and look at keywords to identify and match them to keywords on your resume. You can use ChatGPT to help you with this. • Highlight your digital and Tech skills: Whether you work in Technology or you work in another industry. Computers and technical skills are part of the workforce. You need to list your technical skills, software you've used and are proficient in on your resume. Some jobs will require Microsoft Office as a skill, if a job lists that, you need to list that on your resume.

  • Emphasize on your accomplishments using data: Employers are hiring people who will bring them value. Before you even get an interview, you need to convey what value you're bringing to your current employer and what value you've brought to your past employer.

  • Optimize for readability: No one, and I repeat no one wants a resume that they can't read. Which means that your resume needs to balance enough information and too much/too little information. Standard process is to use 10-12 pt font in Times New Roman or Arial, single space with 1 inch margins. If your resume takes a second page, use that second page.
